Occlusal Guards

Home > Occlusal Guards

What is an Occlusal Guard?

Customized occlusal guards are removable devices that fit over teeth to protect them.  Guards can be made for the upper arch, the lower arch or both.

Why you might need an Occlusal Guard

  • Grinding
  • Generalized pain in teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Broken or missing teeth
  • Sore facial and/or neck muscles
  • Headaches and neckaches
  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Temporomandibular disorders

Key Benefits

  • Preserving enamel and avoiding future tooth structure breakdown
  • Preserving prostheses in the mouth (ie. implants, crowns, bridges)
  • Relaxing sore head and neck muscles
  • Stabilizing gum recession
  • Aid in sleep breathing issues and snoring issues
  • Correcting displaced articular disc in the temporomandibular joint

Process

Dr. Loukaitis work to ensure a customized outcome for each patient and always schedule an initial consultation before beginning treatment.

  • During your first appointment, a thorough occlusal and TMJ evaluation will be completed.  Diagnostic impressions will be taken.  An MRI may be prescribed to further understand the condition of the joint prior to beginning treatment.
  • The following appointment will include MRI evaluation and occlusal guard delivery.
  • 1-2 weeks following appliance delivery, a follow-up appointment will be needed to check in and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Periodic follow-ups are necessary to check appliance as needed.
