Why dental hygiene is important
In addition to obvious cosmetic reasons, the real benefit of a professional dental cleaning is preventive – it helps to prevent more serious problems from occurring.
Your teeth are the gateway to your overall health:
- The second most common disease in the United States is tooth decay (second to the common cold).
- More than 51 million hours of school are lost each year by children due to dental related illness.
- At least 3 out of 4 Americans suffer from some form of periodontal gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss for people over the age of 35.
The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is to have consistently good tooth brushing and flossing techniques, performed consistently on a daily basis, and to visit the dentist regularly.
Regular at-home care
Dr. Loukaitis recommend following the guidelines and procedures set forth by the American Dental Association which include brushing and flossing twice a day. The ADA recommends a dental exam and professional check up every 6 months as well.
Professional cleaning
A thorough cleaning of the teeth and the tissues visible above the gum line is called prophylaxis. Daily brushing and flossing will keep dental plaque to a minimum. A professional cleaning will remove plaque from places your toothbrush and floss have missed and will also remove mineralized plaque called calculus, which brushing and flossing alone cannot remove.

During your cleaning, the hygienist will remove buildup of plaque (a film that accumulates on the teeth and is often full of bacteria) and calculus (calcium and other minerals deposited on the teeth from your saliva). If plaque and calculus accumulate on the teeth, they can lead to more serious problems. Once all of the surfaces of your teeth have been cleansed, the hygienist will polish all surfaces of the teeth.Your appointment may also include diagnostic x-rays, an oral cancer screening exam, gum disease exam and reviewing overall oral health conditions.
When your cleaning is complete, Dr. Loukaitis will review your X-rays and check for cavities and other dental health issues. They will discuss any results and recommendations for follow-up care with you.
